Summary

The first part of this thesis describes the development of sensitive HIV reservoir quantification and characterization assays (Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5). In the second part, these assays were applied to first investigate the dynamics of the reservoir during long-term effective treatment (Chapter 6) and second to investigate the potency of stem cell transplantation to eradicate the reservoir (Chapter 7). Together, this thesis is a roadmap to robust quantification and characterization of the reservoir in the context of HIV persistence and HIV cure.
