The Anti-Inflammatory Characteristics of Circulating Neutrophils in Trauma Patients

The innate immune system, in particular the neutrophil compartment, reacts profoundly to major injury. Previous work from my research group indicated that the immune system can be either in a hyper-inflammatory state and/or in a anti-inflammatory state days to weeks after trauma. Keeping the balance between the two is crucial to avoid frequently seen (immunological) complications after traumatic injury, like infections. In my PhD-project I will mainly focus on the anti-inflammatory state of the neutrophil compartment after trauma and the interaction with pathogens. Hereby I aim to unravel the pathophysiology of this immunresponse to major injury and the occurance of infectious complications.
