SABEL-MedVet: Reflective information Antibiotics Primary Care in Companion Animal Practice
Primary care provided in companion animal and human settings is comparable with many similar issues. General practitioners and companion animal veterinarians regularly prescribe antimicrobials when deemed unnecessary according to guidelines. Inappropriate antimicrobial use increases antimicrobial resistance and continued action is needed to reduce inappropriate prescribing. In recent years, a program aimed at improving antibiotic prescribing in general practitioners has been developed (SABEL). This program provides training and feedback using routine care data from electronic patient files (SABEL). In the SABEL-MedVet project we aim to develop, implement and evaluate a comparable program for companion animal veterinarians. The project will provide insight and awareness about one's own prescribing behavior. The results can be used to develop additional policies to further optimize antibiotic prescribing in primary care.
