Neutrophil dysfunction and its relation to infectious complications in severely injured trauma patients

The number of patients surviving severe traumatic injury has increased over the years while the occurrence of post-traumatic infectious complications has increased. The dysfunction of neutrophils and their specific circulating subsets following trauma have been proposed to play a key role in the anti-inflammatory processes making trauma patients susceptible to infectious complications. We aim to further categorize these specific neutrophil subsets that arise following severe trauma and how their presence relate to the onset of infectious complications.
