Investigating pathophysiological mechanisms underlying ME/CFS and post-COVID symptoms in a paediatric population
ME/CFS is a debilitating disease with an unknown cause. Over recent years evidence has accumulated that suggest that disturbance in metabolism of immune cells and auto-antibodies that recognize own proteins are present in ME/CFS patients. With EnergiseME, we aim to determine which metabolic disturbance in immune cells cause ME/CFS and how they are affected by auto-antibodies. To do so, EnergiseME will gain unprecedented details in how the metabolism of immune cells is affected in subgroups of adult and adolescent ME/CFS patients. In addition, EnergiseME will determine if the presence of autoimmunity causes these metabolic disturbances in immune cells, how they affect the function of immune cells, and lead to development of ME/CFS symptoms. Collectively EnergiseME will provide new insights for a biomedical explanation of ME/CFS, potential (metabolic) biomarkers for ME/CFS, and rationale for new drug targets or drug repurposing.
