Establishing the immunotoxicological effects of microplastics

As member of the POLYRISK and MOMENTUM consortia we will investigate the immunotoxicological effects of various plastics in various shapes and sizes, by studying the inflammation activation and uptake of microplastics by immune cells and the transfer of microplastics over the epithelial barriers of the lung and intestine via the adverse outcompe pathway (AOP) concept. We will also look at the immunotoxicological effects of corona coating of these microplastics by bacterial or chemical substances. In mouse studies we'll study the immune responses in an in vivo situation. With these findings we hope to establish safety measures for the studied microplastic particles.
